The Village

Extending from 1914 to 1920, the first series of epic new series The Village written by Peter Moffat comes to BBC One Sunday 31st March at 9pm.

The series stars John Simm and Maxine Peake as impoverished, alcoholic Peak District farmer John Middleton and his wife, Grace.

13-year-old newcomer Bill Jones, a member of the Nottingham-based Television Workshop, stars as young Bert Middleton, whose long life is central to the anticipated on-going serial. Bert is growing up in extreme poverty on a family farm in Derbyshire. He is twelve years old at the start of the series, and his days are filled with school, his friends, working in the fields with his father and secret swimming lessons with his brother Joe, whom he adores. Young Bert, like his brother, falls in love with new arrival Martha Lane the moment she arrives in the village. He is very confused as he watches the behaviour of his hero elder brother and the girl of his dreams...

22 year old  Nico Mirallegro (represented by The Rights House), recently seen starring in E4's acclaimed My Mad Fat Diary, plays Bert's brother Joe. At the start of the series he is nineteen years old, a strong, handsome young man. He is torn in half by his love for his mother and his little brother, and his yearning to escape the tyranny of his father. He takes a job at the Allingham’s house to bring some money in, and falls in love with Martha Lane.

Alfie Stewart, a regular on CBBC's Sadie J, (represented by Independent Talent) takes over as the teenage Bert Middleton from episode six.

Augustus Prew (represented by The Rights House), shortly to be seen in Kick Ass 2, plays George Allingham, the youngest son of the Allingham family,  thoughtful, delicate and halfway to being a poet, he is also smitten by Martha but quickly works out that Joe Middleton is his rival for her affections.

Irish actress Charlie Murphy (represented by Lisa Richards Agency) stars as Martha Lane, the strong-willed and opinionated daughter of the new Methodist minister.  She wants to help the community and open their eyes to the changes that are taking place in the outside world. John Middleton (John Simm), in particular, is a soul she wants to save, mainly because she wants to be close to Joe. Murphy, who studied at the Gaiety School of Acting for two years, has been a recurring character in Stuart Carolan’s ‘Love/Hate’ since season one aired in 2010. She has had roles in Irish dramas ‘The Clinic’, and ‘Single-Handed’, as well as landing a guest role on Channel 4 series ‘Misfits’ this year.

The large cast also includes:

David Ryall plays Old Bert Middleton, Juliet Stevenson plays Clem Allingham, Kit Jackson plays Lord Allingham, Augustus Prew plays George Allingham, Emily Beecham plays Caro Allingham, Matt Stokoe plays Gerard Eyre, Charlie Murphy plays Martha Lane, and Stephen Walters plays Crispin Ingham.

The six part series was filmed on location in the Peak District.

The Maze Runner

Three young British actors have landed roles in The Maze Runner, Fox’s adaptation of the sci-fi Young Adult novel, the first in a series of books set in a post-apocalyptic world by James Dashner, to be directed by Wes Ball.

Here's the synopsis:

Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies from below. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in "the glade" for two years, trying to find a way to escape through a maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change...

20 year old Will Poulter will play Gally, a Glader who mistrusts Thomas from the beginning, turning into Tom's first enemy in the Glade. Will (represented in the UK by Hamilton Hodell) made his screen acting debut in Son of Rambow, went on to play Eustace in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,  last year filmed alongside Jennifer Aniston in We Are The Millers, and recently wrapped on Julian Gilbey's heist thriller Plastic.

22 year old Thomas Brodie-Sangster (represented by Curtis Brown), who is about to be seen playing Jojen Reed in the third series of Game of Thrones, will play Newt, a tall Glader who is leader Alby's second-in-command.

27 year old Aml Ameen (represented in the UK by Independent Talent) will play Alby, the honourable but stern leader of the Gladers. Aml got his big break in Kidulthood and has gone on to feature in many TV and film roles in the UK and US,  including a series regular role as Malcolm Davies in Harry's Law.

No news yet on who will take the lead role of Thomas....

Youngers comes to E4 on 20th March

Back in July last year, Big Talk Productions conducted open auditions in London to find new faces, with over 350 applicants aged 16 - 19, turning up - from actors, to rappers and aspiring music artists.

Now the new show Youngers, a witty and original new comedy drama series set in South East London, is set to start on E4 at 19:30pm on Wednesday 20th March.

The series follows a group of friends trying to negotiate their way through teenage life in a world that's more about swagger than straight As.

In episode one, it's GCSE results day and friends Yemi (Ade Oyefeso) and Jay (Calvin Demba) nervously make their way to school to find out what the future holds. Aspiring producer Yemi aces his results, but there's no celebrating for Jay. Determined to swerve a career fixing boilers with his dad, Jay picks up a leaflet for Mic Star, a local music competition that could be his break into the urban music industry. On enrolment day for Chairwood, Yemi meets current student Davina, who has an interesting take on Mic Star, and could change Yemi’s mind. But for these Youngers it's never going to be that easy....

Written by Levi David Addai with Benjamin Kuffuor, Mark Catley and Georgia Lester, the series is produced by Big Talk Productions for E4.

Check out the characters and cast:

Calvin Demba plays Jay. Calvin previously played Scott in Hollyoaks and is represented by MN Talent Management.

Jay's a charmer... a proper lad's lad. When it comes to girls, he's a self-confessed addict and a bit of a lady killer. His other love? Spitting bars.

Jay's been best friends with Yemi since primary school days. Impulsive, he's lead in life by his passions. Jay downright refuses to be seen as merely a teenager or younger. He believes - knows - he is the next big thing... he's just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.

Newcomer Ade Oyefeso (represented by Troika) plays Yemi. Ade played also played the role in the pilot for the series which was called Trainees.

Yemi is humble. Yemi is mild-mannered. Both of these things are useful, because Yemi is also Jay's long-suffering best friend.

A talented bedroom producer, Yemi's torn between his loyalty to his mum, his ambitions for college and his love of music. He's got a hunger for success – but wants to do it the 'right way'. And that usually means playing things cautiously, a bit different to his mate Jay, who likes taking a punt on things.

Shavani Seth (represented by Identity Agency Group) plays the beautiful and graceful Davina.

Davina lives in South London but she reckons she's "on the wrong side". Davina's not privileged... but definitely not ghetto.

Her love of singing and urban music means the Youngers is a natural home for her. But will her insecurity about where she comes hold her back?

Joining them, as previously announced on Screenterrier, are YouTube heroes Mandem On The Wall aka recent BRIT school graduates 18 year old Joivan Wade, 19 year old Percelle Ascott , and 24 year old comedy actor Dee Kartier, (all represented by Sainou). They live near Jay and Yemi and are always around to offer some words of wisdom. Sort of :). They are Failia (ladies man), Yungah Baker (loose cannon - prone to emotional outbreaks) and Yungah Baby Tinie Winie (sweet boy - and the sensible one of the three).

Youngers starts 19:30pm Wednesday 20th March on E4
