Maleficent

Elle Fanning is in talks to star as Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty) in Maleficent, Disney‘s live-action retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story.

She will star alongside Angelina Jolie who will play the title role of Maleficent, the self-proclaimed ‘Mistress of All Evil’ in ‘Sleeping Beauty’, who cursed the princess as a baby to prick her finger and die before she reached her sixteenth birthday. The film is a prequel of sorts to the original fairy tale, detailing the origins of the evil sorceress and the complex relationship between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty.

13-year-old Fanning will shortly be seen in Cameron Crowe‘s We Bought a Zoo, following her roles in J.J. AbramsSuper 8 and Sofia Coppola‘s 2010 movie, Somewhere. She is currently in London filming Sally Potter's new film Bomb.

Maleficent is due to start shooting in the UK in June until September, and is being described as a “passion project” for Jolie, who has been attached to the project since last summer.

The film will be directed by Robert Stromberg, from a script by Linda Woolverton, who also wrote Beauty and the Beast (the first animated movie to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar) and Alice in Wonderland, and co-wrote The Lion King.
