some casting calls posted on Screenterrier back in January. The Channel 4 series it was for, Top Boy, is about to hit our screens.
Top Boy is Ronan Bennett's new four-part drama about young people living on the edge and, for the most part, out of sight in east London today. Directed by Yann Demange, Top Boy showcases a fresh and dynamic line up of first-time actors, brought together through extensive talent searches across London.
Newcomer Malcolm Kamulete stars as 13-year-old Ra'Nell who has to "step up and be a man" when his mother Lisa (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) has a breakdown and is hospitalised. At the same time his mum's friend Heather (Kierston Wareing), enlists his help in a dangerous plan she has concocted to give her unborn baby the chances she never had - "even if it means doing one wrong thing to get to the right place."
Olivia Musangi plays Precious, a sweet, generous schoolmate of Ra'Nell's and a good student who really likes him and becomes his girl-friend.
The young cast of newcomers is joined by Ashley Walters who stars as 26 year old gang leader Dushane. Dushane has grown up on the Summerhouse estate and feels he has run out of options apart from dealing drugs. He still lives with his mother, Pat, a devout churchgoer, but is determined to become ‘Top Boy'. He runs the local gang with his friend Sully (Kane Robinson) and dreams of making enough money to get out of the game.
Ashley was a graduate of The Sylvia Young Theatre School, and already a teen actor in Grange Hill when he shot to fame as Asher D in So Solid Crew. His lead role in Bullet Boy won him Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards.
