Attack the Block star hits the US

Attack the Block star, 18 year old British actor John Boyega, one of Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow 2011, has landed the lead role in Spike Lee's new boxing drama for HBO, Da Brick, loosely based on aspects of former boxer Mike Tyson’s youth.

He will play Donnie, who after his release from juvenile detention on his 18th birthday, begins an exploration of what it means to be a man for himself and those around him.

Da Brick is described as a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in a supposedly post-racial America.

Julito McCullum (The Wire) will play Kevin, Donnie's best friend and the one person he can't leave behind, no matter how much he may want to.

Former boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, and Entourage creator Doug Ellin are attached as executive producers.

Spike Lee with direct the pilot for the drama which will be set in Newark, N.J., which is often dubbed "Brick City."
