One to Watch - Anna Jobarteh

Look out for 14 year old Anna Jobarteh from Blackpool who has landed key roles in both the new series of Waterloo Road and the new CBBC drama Army Kids.

Anna spent 6 months filming the role of Ruth Kirby, a 13 year old in Year 9 at the Waterloo Road school, who makes her debut in the sixth series scheduled for transmission on BBC1 this autumn.

Previously homeschooled from a young age by her father Marcus, precocious and witty, Ruth already has some A* GCSEs at the age of 13.
Her first experience of primary school was so traumatic that her parents pulled her out within days. Since then, her parents have "hothoused" her with one-to-one tuition and this is how her life has been up until she's enrolled in Waterloo Road. Ruth has a nasty streak and enjoys using her intellect to put others down – she sees Waterloo Road as beneath her and isn't afraid to tell anyone. While Ruth has an IQ to envy, she doesn't have social skills and often disrupts classes because she feels bored. She's a prime target for bullying and taunting and Ruth can't seem to gel with anyone – not even the adults, who she's used to impressing.

And Anna (represented by Scream Management) has also now been cast in a lead role in new CBBC drama Army Kids, filming this August.

Anna, who studies drama, dance and singing at Scream! theatre school, Blackpool, fought off stiff competition to win the role of newcomer, Ruth  in Waterloo Road.

And Waterloo Road will not be Anna's debut on the small screen – she appeared as Dionne in two episodes of the BBC1's recent sci-fi series, Paradox, starring Tamsin Outhwaite.

Working with television stars isn't going to Anna's head.

"She is lucky to have had the chances to do major things, but there is always an element of luck in these things," said Jane.

"Watching her on television does seem funny, and she is very critical of herself."

She said that Anna's friends were really supportive of her, sharing in her excitement when she landed two such major roles.

Anna is saving up the money she is earning and may well invest some of it in honing her talent with extra acting classes.

"She does treat herself occasionally, too," said Jane.

Anna has always wanted to act. "She has been acting since she was at St Nicholas's Primary School," said jane. "She took part in Schools Alive and played Mary Poppins in a one of the montages.

"She has always wanted to perform and certainly isn't quiet!"
