Carey Mulligan will take the role of Florence in Sam Mendes' new film On Chesil Beach.
The film is based on Ian McEwan's novella - an account of the wedding night of a young, educated couple, both virgins and, as McEwan wrote in the novel's opening paragraph, living 'in a time when a conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible'.
McEwan has adapted his own book for the big screen.
Mendes, his partners at Neal Street Productions and Focus Features (BBC Films may also become involved), are currently studying screen tests featuring a handful of British actors who could play Edward, a graduate historian, who is more a 'blokey-bloke', as someone described him, rather than a pretty boy.
Locations have already been scouted in Dorset, where the real Chesil Beach with its spit of shingle is located, Oxford, the Chilterns and central London.
Shooting is expected to start in late September.
